Self-learning has always been a specialty of a minority.

What we call “upgrading our own operating system” is actually the process of repeatedly self-learning. Why do people have to have the ability to self-learn? Everyone has different reasons. I will share my own reasons.

Many years ago, I heard someone say, “Teachers are the engineers of the human soul.” This statement frightened me. From the beginning, I worried that some teachers were actually unqualified, and after many years of being a teacher myself, I confirmed that my suspicion was correct…Throughout history and across different cultures, most teachers are actually unqualified, and even for those who are, the qualifications are often issued without proper evaluation. The thought that my soul could be mishandled by them made me panic, and I knew right then that I had to learn to self-educate. I had to mold my own soul; I couldn’t trust anyone else with it- it had to be my responsibility.

How firmly do I believe in this idea? Almost from the beginning, I believed that teaching is the best method of learning. This principle will always hold true. However, when I was young, I was a troublemaker, often reckless and with senseless humor. At that time, I often joked that this was “purifying my soul by confusing others’ minds.” As an adult, I deeply understood how malicious this was, and even making that kind of joke should be unpardonable. Of course, many unqualified teachers eventually ended up “continuing to poison others’ minds with their own confused souls”…… I really don’t know how many levels better or worse they are compared to the reckless brat from many years ago.

As time passed, I increasingly found that self-learning is actually very simple, so simple – to what extent? If a person still hasn’t mastered this basic skill in adulthood, they are destined to be no more than a primitive animal for the rest of their life. Self-learning is very simple; it is the continuous acquisition, accumulation, research, polishing, and upgrading of concepts and methodologies. Furthermore, self-learning ability is enhanced through accumulation. People who start self-learning, learn faster and faster. Self-learners are like opening a black hole in their brains: initially, it’s unnoticeable because the mass of the black hole is too small, almost like it doesn’t exist; but as time passes, the mass of the black hole gradually accumulates and another phenomenon will eventually emerge— many pieces of knowledge seem to “spontaneously” fly into their minds.

How to explain this phenomenon? A good self-learner will eventually develop an important ability: comprehensive understanding. And the premise of comprehensive understanding is… well, in “The Methodology of Surprise and Creating Surprise,” I have already discussed this: only when there is a certain degree of concepts, do they have the chance to produce “unexpected connections” – That is, the so-called comprehensive understanding.

Good self-learners are constantly learning and thinking, which greatly increases the probability of them “accidentally” discovering something, “suddenly” realizing something, “suddenly” reaching a new conclusion and so on. For them, even “accidents” are more frequent and more significant, and progress- continuous and substantial- is a steeper inevitable trend for them. When that apple fell, Newton happened to see it, and that moment of his “enlightenment” is a manifestation of this phenomenon- whether that falling object was an apple or not is not important, and whether the apple was there doesn’t matter because Newton would have eventually, at some point, seen something else, “suddenly” realized what he should have realized.

Not only that, people who are good at learning will become better at learning over time. Their learning abilities will become stronger because insights gained at one point might prove useful at another. Knowledge (concepts and methodologies) seems to have a life of its own. It ferments, connects, and collides to generate more life. Learning is almost the only daily activity that can consistently bring surprises (unintended good fortune or serendipity). Moreover, the happiness (dopamine secretion) associated with these surprises continues to grow.

Initially, it might not be obvious, but eventually, everything changes. You become the engineer of your soul. You truly work like an engineer to shape your own soul, often spending long periods of time in contemplation, thinking about what your soul lacks, what it needs, what needs strengthening, and what needs repairing, and then using all your soul’s energy to do what needs to be done.

Occasionally, I listen to an old song, Pink Floyd has a lyric: “We don’t need no education.” In my eyes, this seemingly deep lyric has a twist of irony because there are people in the world who never needed education from the start. They have been “edmeccated” from the outset. Some friends and I, just as an example, create words every day, joyfully participating in a seemingly mundane yet consistently surprising clandestine game.

Furthermore, self-study doesn’t require a specific method, but rather a certain attitude. Those who hate and resist learning, ultimately giving it up entirely, do so because learning was never something done for themselves. They’ve always learned “for others,” such as to meet parental expectations or to maintain a certain image. Essentially, it was never about self-improvement. Doing something “unauthentic” for yourself isn’t sustainable. Thus, resentment and resistance naturally emerge, leading to quick abandonment.

Therefore, in the end, after leaving school and entering the workforce, most people are not working for themselves, but rather for others, continuing their long-standing way of life. An observed phenomenon is as follows: some people who performed moderately in school ultimately achieve great success, while many who excelled in school are eventually forgotten.

Encountering common phenomena and then correctly analyzing them to draw valid conclusions is an essential indicator of good thinking abilities and habits for further growth.

When encountering the previously mentioned phenomenon, people tend to provide explanations completely devoid of analysis, and are not withstand scrutiny, such as saying, “This proves that education isn’t useful!” The correct explanation should be based on the understanding that there are two types of people: those who do things for themselves, even if not doing well in certain areas; and those who do things for others, even if excelling in certain areas. With this understanding, it is clear that the conclusion “education is actually not useful” can’t be supported, regardless of the circumstances.
当遇到前面提到的现象时,人们往往会提供完全没有分析的解释,并且经不起推敲,例如说:“这证明教育没有用!正确的解释应该基于对有两种类型的人的理解:那些为自己做事的人,即使在某些方面做得不好;以及那些为他人做事的人,即使在某些领域表现出色。有了这种理解,很明显,无论在什么情况下,“教育实际上没有用”的结论都是站不住脚的。

At this point, people begin to differentiate, with those who strive for themselves gradually becoming the so-called elite, and those who handle things for others gradually becoming the so-called common people. Indeed, those who work for themselves will definitely strive harder! Those who work for others will naturally just manage things, won’t they? If you want to start a business and find a trustworthy partner, pay attention to two basic principles: stay away from those who are “performative” players, and instead find those who are “enterprising” players, no matter how much effort it takes. Stay away from those who just manage things, and instead look for those who take things to heart and truly make them their own. Actually, these two foundations are traits born from the same root. “Performative” players are more concerned with their current performance and how others see them; whereas “enterprising” players are more concerned with their current progress, emphasize their self-assessment and its accuracy, in order to make sure “tomorrow will be better.” The latter may become the kind of person “living in the future.”
实际上,这两个基础是从同一个根源中诞生的特征。“表演型”玩家更关心他们目前的表现以及其他人如何看待他们;而“有进取心”的球员更关心他们目前的进步,强调他们的自我评估及其准确性,以确保“明天会更好”。后者可能会成为那种“活在未来”的人。

“Performative” players often do things not for their own progress, but to simply look good in the moment and gain more immediate recognition. This subtle difference leads to a world of difference over the long term. For “performative” players, external feedback constitutes their entire “reward” and determines the cost of their efforts. If parents praise them a bit more, they’ll study a bit more to continue being praised. If their salary increases a bit, they’ll try to work a bit more to make it seem worthwhile. This is their true mindset. Those who are “enterprising” do things for their own progress. The greatest part of their rewards in doing something does not come from external rewards or praise, but from their own progress. Even when they are not doing well enough, or even when they are being ignored or scorned externally, the reward is still clear: there’s always some progress, even if it’s perceived but indeed experienced!

But this is indeed a very subtle trap:

Living for others, yet genuinely feeling it’s “for one’s own benefit”;

Living for oneself, yet ultimately appearing and truly being “selfless”.

Why should you directly stay away from the first kind of people? Firstly, because their habits and attitudes are deeply ingrained, and they’ve been this way almost from the moment they started to understand things, mostly reinforced by their parents’ habits and attitudes. Secondly, over time, their understanding of each result will be different, further solidifying these habits and attitudes. More importantly, this is the most fundamental value, located at the core of the “operating system,” and it’s difficult to be compatible with different operating systems. Trying to change them is entirely meaningless, and no one can do it—unless, one day, they themselves realize it, and change. But to be honest, that hope is too faint.

Knowledge cannot be inherited through genes, just as intelligence. However, parents’ influence on children begins from the very moment they are born (some even consider prenatal education to be important). So, if you want to find a lifelong partner, also pay attention to these two foundations, because they directly impact the future of your child—essentially the same principle as finding a business partner. If you are already a parent, let bygones be bygones, and from now on, transform yourself into an enterprising player, into someone who “works hard for their own progress.” Otherwise, your child is destined to become part of the common people, and for you, the consequences will undoubtedly be severe.
