How did I achieve financial freedom?

When I was in high school, in my physics textbook (probably in the first volume of the first year), there was an important concept, “Escape Velocity,” also known as “Second Cosmic Velocity.” This concept is so fascinating that it has captivated my thoughts. It remains one of my favorite concepts to this day and into the foreseeable future.

Using basic concepts such as velocity, acceleration, kinetic energy, potential energy, and pi, we can clearly calculate the first cosmic velocity as 7.9 km/s. With this initial velocity, a spacecraft can orbit the Earth. If the initial velocity exceeds 11.2 km/s, which surpasses the second cosmic velocity, the spacecraft can break free from the Earth’s gravitational pull and leave the Earth. The third cosmic velocity, 16.7 km/s, can allow a spacecraft to leave the solar system, and the fourth cosmic velocity, approximately 52.5 km/s, can enable escape from the Milky Way.

Back in school, my books always looked new because I was used to coming back at the start of the school year, memorizing the concepts of each chapter, and then leaving the book aside, occasionally attending classes and doing some exercises. It seemed like an easy ride. At that time, I found it amusing and felt quite pleased to see my classmates covering their new books with protective covers, thinking that I had mastered the secret to protect my books.

But this time, I couldn’t resist the urge. Seeing those numbers felt magical, and I just had to understand the whole calculation process. In a matter of days, I had thoroughly read the entire textbook. This was, undoubtedly, my first experience of “high-speed learning.” Although I just skimmed through the material, it felt like a challenging journey. The sense of accomplishment I derived from this learning process was overwhelming. I suddenly realized that my method of “protecting my books” had actually allowed me to surpass the “first cosmic velocity” in my learning speed. This high-density learning experience made me feel the “escape velocity.”

Back then, the term “thinking outside the box” was not yet known, and there was really no one around with whom I could share the miraculous process and the marvelous feelings associated with it. I tried to talk about it to my desk mate once, but I realized I was risking being resented if I continued, so I kept quiet.

Many years later, I came across a line in the film “Kung Fu Hustle,” spoken by Stephen Chow: “All the kung fu in the world is no match for speed.” I genuinely didn’t think of it as pretentious; I knew it was true in a way.

I had been thinking of ways to make money early on, and I was able to come up with solutions. When I was a junior in college, I saw in the newspaper that the newly built Hua Zheng Wholesale Market near the Changchun Railway Station was seeking investment, so I went to find the general manager of Hua Zheng and said, “I can help you attract investment in my hometown. How much commission will you give me?” The tall and strong female manager was stunned for a moment and said, “You are so young, is it okay? However, if you can do it, we will sign a contract and give you a 10% commission.” With the contract in hand, I took a leave of absence and went back to my hometown, Yanji. I placed an advertisement in the Yanbian Daily, borrowed money, rented a room in the best hotel in the city, and started “attracting investment.” In about a week, I sold goods worth over 200,000, earning over 20,000 in commissions. I didn’t ask for cash but got a decent little counter— that was in 1994. Fellow student Luo Yonghao witnessed the entire process, as if he ran to find someone who placed the newspaper advertisement.

At that time, I told my friends that making money should be quick, not because we are greedy, but because we understand the principles. As physics books say, in order to break away from terrestrial gravity and fly out, you need to exceed the second cosmic velocity… I have always made money very quickly. Helping Hua Zheng Wholesale Market attract investment allowed me to earn a “ten thousand” level of income for the first time, and that happened within about ten days; later I did many things, and they were all done quickly.

Although this analogy is good, in reality, there is no formula to calculate how fast one must earn money to reach the “second cosmic velocity” as in the physics book. Furthermore, in reality, the financial “acceleration due to gravity” far exceeds the imagination of a young person.

Around 1997, I had already earned a million-level cash—by then, I was the regional general agent for Jinying Graphics Card. However, a sudden event in the following two to three years rapidly emptied my savings—my father fell ill. During this process, I gained a profound understanding of the commercialization of medical care policies, and I witnessed many people who, after falling ill, had to return home and wait for death because they had no money for treatment… Around 2000, I was completely broke, and I had to find a high-income and stable “job,” that’s how I ended up at New Oriental for seven years, which was the only time I was an employee in my life.

In fact, around 1995, I encountered another “disaster”—several friends and I lost the money we had earned from operating a clothing wholesale business with Hua Zheng. Because it was a bad thing and involved friends, I don’t want to publicly disclose the details, even today. The result was that tens of thousands of dollars disappeared…an entire year’s work went to waste. Not only did it go to waste, I also ended up in debt. This directly led to me being unable to “find a job” after graduating from university. Working at a bank would only pay a few hundred yuan a month, and with that salary, I would never be able to pay off my debts. Pressure can be turned into motivation; without this pressure, I might have really looked for a job, but with this pressure, finding a job was impossible, so I had to find a way to do business—back and forth, I went to Sanhao Street in Shenyang, starting with selling CDs…

After my father fell ill, I sold my booth, kiosk, and company at Sanhao Street in Shenyang and returned to my hometown. During those three years, I had a computer company and an internet café in Yanji… I kept thinking to myself, this is not my fault; this is just a “natural disaster” and “force majeure.” In the end, I still found a way to earn money faster than others. I read an English article online one night and quickly understood how to build a diskless network (RPL, PXE, concepts that few people know now). Building an internet café with this method cost less than others, so the profit naturally increased significantly… However, this good fortune did not last long. First, I encountered a scammer named Zou Lianjun (people who have been scammed are hesitant to tell the details), then I encountered a police officer named Zhao who prohibited me from building a diskless network for unspecified reasons. Once again, I was broke and in debt. This was at the end of 1999…

So, the seven years at New Oriental were a period of rest for me. Whatever disgusting things I encountered at New Oriental, I have always been grateful to my former boss, Yu Minhong, because those things were really “nothing” compared to what I encountered outside. Although the remuneration at New Oriental was high (relative to the entire training industry), it was not enough for me, so I began to think about something not limited by “acceleration due to gravity”—writing books. Without an environment like New Oriental, I would never have been able to do it… After that, as my long-term readers know, from around 2002, I basically worked entirely online—although for a long time, I never talked about my personal life online.

So, to put it in a more vivid way:

Earning money slowly is a sin, an original sin.

Because the financial “acceleration due to gravity” is relatively harsh when compared to it. Most people are simply unaware of this fact. If you earn little money, if you earn it slowly, you will never be able to “take off,” let alone “fly away”… There was a year when Cui Jian released a song, and the last line of the lyrics was “I can’t fly anymore”, and when I heard that line, my tears just fell down.

The financial “acceleration due to gravity” includes all sorts of things, primarily:

No inherited assets
Debts and interest
Deception and betrayal
Occasional disasters
Taxation and insurance
Necessary expenses

How do spacecraft take off? Scientists have to consider a few things – the weight of the spacecraft, the initial speed, the amount of fuel it can carry —— the fuel tank itself also has weight, which is a killer. So, the solution that scientists have come up with is, after reaching a certain height, they jettison a fuel tank to reduce the weight of the spacecraft. Then, after flying a certain distance, they have to discard another fuel tank…

In other words, earning money slowly is like the financial “acceleration due to gravity,” preventing people from flying higher and farther. These financial “acceleration due to gravity” factors include no inherited assets, debts and interest, deception and betrayal, occasional disasters, taxation and insurance, and necessary expenses. Just like a rocket launch, when scientists design spacecraft, they have to consider weight, speed, and fuel. To reduce the spacecraft’s weight, they discard a fuel tank at a certain height and then another one after flying a certain distance. In other words, all these factors are part of financial gravity, restraining people’s financial flight.

This is such an inspiring methodology!

For a long time, I didn’t buy a car—the prices have dropped in recent years. But more importantly, I made the decision not to buy a house from the beginning. In my eyes, the high house prices weren’t the main concern. The real issue was the financial “gravity” it carried, along with high interest rates. Buying a house meant paying off the mortgage for twenty or even thirty years, and just the thought of it gave me a headache. Instead, I spent a lot of money on books, especially during my time at New Oriental. I would spend at least $1000 per month on books from Amazon, and my credit card limit gradually increased due to this consumption. I believed that knowledge possessed energy, and it wasn’t subject to the limitations of financial “gravity.” Whenever I had some spare money, which was quite rare during that period, I would find ways to invest in the Hong Kong stock market and buy US stocks. In my eyes, at that time, Chinese people buying US stocks was almost like a way to make money in “zero gravity.”

At the end of 2005, my father passed away. My mother didn’t speak for several days. Then one morning at breakfast, she suddenly said, “Xiaolai, you are free now.” I replied, “Well, I know.” Without the blackmail of medical expenses, I suddenly became financially free. That was a fact. So, I prepared for a while and resigned from New Oriental in the summer of 2007. It was around the Chinese New Year of that year when I began writing “Use Time as a Friend.” I was 35 years old at that time. When I left New Oriental, I had already learned how to create, how to manage finances, and had a profound understanding of creating “passive income.”

For the following years, I was always “doing other things.” I started a consultancy company for studying abroad, but in the situation where my basic needs were covered, I could only “do other things.” Sometimes I would try this, sometimes I would try that. On Twitter, Zhu Feng’s evaluation of me was that, in general, I was most reliable when “doing other things.” Why did I do this? It was simple. I had surpassed the “escape velocity” in terms of finance. My earning speed had steadily and inevitably surpassed the financial “gravity,” and I had entered a state of “zero gravity.” This continued until the beginning of 2011, when I came across something remarkable, as you know.

Today, I often chat with the founders of startup companies. If I had to share any valuable experience with them, I would tell them: “To make money, it has to be fast, fast enough to surpass the ‘second cosmic velocity.’ Otherwise, you won’t be able to fly.” Of course, many people simply can’t take off… because they seem to think that making money is very low. They feel embarrassed to make money, they are afraid to make money, and they even openly look down on those who strive to make money or earn a lot of money. After communicating with them, you’ll find that these people seem to be completely unaware of the financial “gravity.” They mistakenly believe that they live in a vacuum, and think that although they also want to soar, not being able to do so is the normal result. The strange thing is, they also want to make money, want to earn a lot of money quickly, but are unwilling to admit it, and are not willing to tell others. The direct or indirect result is that they enter a state of “self-deception.” You must remember that our brains will not lie to us. If you lie to it, its strategy is to believe that lie until it becomes a fact.

Don’t be fooled by my confident tone now. Every time during critical moments, I have struggled continuously to reach the essence and to attain simplicity. In this process, I often become swayed, or tripped up by myself. I frequently reflect on this after having learned it the hard way, and then slowly come to understand the same simple truth. After many times, I finally realized that simplicity actually requires strength to temper.

Most people don’t like simple statements. However, all statements that are not uncomplicated enough tend to induce “self-deception.” For example, a business plan—this simple concept, what is it really? The most straightforward definition is this:

Your business plan is your money-making plan.

The statements like “changing the world”, “passion”, and “revolutionizing”, etc. are not simple enough. You can change the world in a business or non-business way. You can have passion or go against the grain, but it doesn’t have to be in a commercial way. Since it’s business, you have to make money. It’s foolish and unethical for a business not to make money. Making money can also change the world, have passion, and go against the grain, but why not put making money first in a simple way?

When training investment managers, I would give them over a hundred business plans and tell them to pick the good ones and take notes on why they are good. A month later, I would ask if they had finished reading them. When they said yes, I would then explain the core criteria for evaluating business plans.

Since a business plan is a plan for making money, using such a simple description makes the criteria for evaluating business plans particularly simple:

  • How much money can you possibly earn?
  • How quickly could you possibly earn that much money?

Bear in mind: it’s “possibly,” not certain or necessary. Also, “quickly” is not a single variable; quantity and speed together give it meaning.

I would then ask them, “When you were reading, did you find many business plans that you thought were very good? Did some of them surprise you? Shock you? Even make you feel inferior?”

The answer was always yes. Then I would tell them that these were all illusions. As long as the definitions and statements we use are simple enough, you can realize that they are all illusions. All these business plans are garbage, even if some have received venture capital (which doesn’t mean anything). Plans that cannot make a lot of money quickly are garbage.

Especially those who ask investors for money without really understanding how much money they can make or how quickly they can make it are just playing tricks. Investors are calm, they want “potential” (which means, it could also fail). These people have no concept at all—how can they continue to play?

Well, we can move on to the next stage now …

What is the next stage? I would tell them about the errors I made when starting my own business or making investments in the past. In the end, all the errors were the same: I was too stupid at that time, so much so that when starting a business or making investments, I didn’t put the amount and speed of making money in the first place… I’m not only ashamed in front of the investors but also to myself!

I’ve said so much. That’s about it.

The problem is, now I’m telling you in such a simple way, that the method I used to achieve financial freedom is very simple: it is based on simple thinking, simple methodology, and simple practice— I really can’t do anything not simple—do you really believe it? Or dare to believe it?
